The Flying Method of an Artist with a Fear of Flying

Nedko Solakov is afraid of flying. Rather than fly to Singapore to install his work for SB2011, Solokov invited Singaporean artist and filmmaker Liao Jiekai to fly to his home in Sofia to receive instructions for his work at Old Kallang Airport. For four days, Solakov worked with Jeikai to convey his process. The Flying Method of an Artist with a Fear of Flying (2011) documents this experience of transference and exchange as it occurs in Bulgaria, painting a vivid comparison between Sofia and Singapore. In a cheeky and bold act of subversion, Solokov instructed Jiekai to chew a piece of Bulgarian gum and stick it in the exhibition space.
